As intended, Casulen II was launched again on the 5th July, but we ended up using the slipway in Dover, as the outer slipway at Ramsgate was blocked by a funfair that had been set up on the pier and the inner slip was too shallow. Once in the water, we motored Casulen II round to the marina to step the mast, before going on a short sail to check everything was working properly. I had invited Jack Daly on board for the day as we had agreed last year that we must get out sailing together sometime. We had a short sail out of Dover harbour into the Channel and when we got back Jack admitted that he regretted selling his corribee!
Having looked at a weather forecast I intended to leave Dover on the 6th, but once down at the harbour I was overcome with the memories of being "out there" on my own last year. Having spent 67 days on board Casulen II last summer on my own, I have come to the decision, rightly or wrongly, that single handed sailing over any period of more than a day or two at once, is not for me and I took the rest of the day to think things over. I decided that I wasn't going to abandon the trip completed, but to carry on but with a "crewmember" with me, any one of a number of friends and family. I will also be taking the opportunity to invite others along for a passage, so if you're interested, then feel free to contact me. With the decision now made, this morning the wind was still blowing around force 6-7 from the west, which made leaving unfeasable, so I'll be leaving tomorrow for Eastbourne, then Cowes for the first leg of my non-single handed journey. My first crewmember will be Rosie, my girlfriend.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their support so far, it has been greatly appreciated and won't be forgotten:) Athough in some respects I feel that I have let many people and myself down by the decision I have made, but I hope people will appreciate that this has been a hard deceision for me to make.
Jonny.
